BeachWalk Shopping Center — Open-Air Mall Cooling

The Venue

BeachWalk Shopping Center is a modern open-air retail and dining destination in Kuta, just steps from the beach. The mall’s architectural concept embraces the tropical setting with open walkways, natural ventilation, and outdoor dining terraces that blur the line between indoor and outdoor shopping.

The Challenge

The open-air concept is what makes BeachWalk distinctive, but it comes with a built-in problem: shoppers and diners are directly exposed to Bali’s tropical heat. During peak hours, walkway temperatures climb into the low-to-mid 30s, and the combination of heat and humidity discourages browsing.

Shoppers would rush between air-conditioned stores rather than lingering in the walkways, dining areas, and common spaces that generate foot traffic and spending. Outdoor dining tenants faced reduced covers during the hottest hours, and the overall dwell time in the mall suffered.

The mall needed a cooling solution that could be deployed across multiple zones, from long walkways to compact dining terraces, without disrupting the open, airy aesthetic that defines the property.

The Solution

MistSystem installed a zoned high-pressure mist cooling system across BeachWalk’s key outdoor areas. The system was designed to address different space types within the same property.

Key elements of the installation:

• Walkway cooling along primary pedestrian corridors, integrated into overhead structures and architectural elements
• Dining zone cooling for outdoor restaurant and cafe terraces, keeping diners comfortable without wetting tables or food
• 70-bar high-pressure operation ensuring ultra-fine mist evaporates in the air, not on shoppers or merchandise
• 6mm stainless steel lines routed along existing structures to maintain the mall’s clean, modern look
• Independent zone control allowing management to activate cooling in specific areas based on occupancy and time of day

The installation was coordinated with mall management to minimize disruption to retail operations during the build-out.

The Result

The mist cooling system transformed the outdoor experience at BeachWalk, delivering temperature reductions of up to 10 degrees Celsius in treated zones.

Shopper behavior: Visitors now spend more time in walkways and outdoor common areas instead of rushing between air-conditioned stores. The browsing experience improved, benefiting retailers across the property.

Dining tenants: Outdoor restaurants and cafes saw improved covers during midday hours. Diners choose outdoor seating more often, and tables stay dry despite the mist system operating overhead.

Energy savings: Cooling open-air walkways with traditional AC would be impractical and prohibitively expensive. The mist system delivers effective cooling at up to 90% less energy, making it the only viable solution for a venue of this design.

Aesthetic integration: The stainless steel lines blend into BeachWalk’s modern architecture. Shoppers experience the cooling effect without noticing the hardware, preserving the open-air ambiance that defines the property.
