Biku Bali — Heritage Venue Meets Modern Comfort

The Venue

Biku is one of Seminyak’s most distinctive restaurants, housed in a traditional Javanese joglo, a centuries-old wooden structure that was carefully transported and reassembled in Bali. The venue is known for its afternoon tea service, international cuisine, and the unique atmosphere created by the heritage architecture. Every detail of the space, from the carved teak columns to the antique furnishings, contributes to an experience that guests travel specifically to enjoy.

The Challenge

The traditional joglo structure, while architecturally beautiful, was not designed for modern climate control. The open-sided design that gives the venue its character also means full exposure to Bali’s heat and humidity.

Installing conventional cooling equipment was not an option. The heritage architecture could not accommodate bulky AC units, visible ductwork, or large fans without fundamentally compromising the aesthetic that makes Biku special. Any modification to the structure needed to be invisible and non-destructive.

The challenge was specific: how to deliver meaningful cooling to an open-air dining space within a traditional wooden structure, without altering the look or feel of the heritage architecture in any way.

The Solution

MistSystem designed a high-pressure mist installation that works within the constraints of traditional Javanese architecture. The system was engineered to be as discreet as the venue demanded.

Key elements of the installation:

• 6mm stainless steel lines slim enough to follow the existing wooden beam structure of the joglo, virtually disappearing against the carved teak
• 70-bar high-pressure operation producing ultra-fine mist that cools the air without creating visible clouds or wetting the antique wood, furnishings, or guests
• Non-invasive mounting that attaches to existing structural elements without drilling into, modifying, or damaging the heritage woodwork
• Custom routing designed in consultation with the venue to ensure every line follows natural architectural lines and remains hidden from the guest perspective

The slim profile of the 6mm stainless steel lines was critical for this project. Larger tubing or visible hardware would have been immediately noticeable against the detailed traditional woodwork.

The Result

Biku now offers comfortable outdoor dining in a heritage setting without any visible compromise to the architecture.

Invisible integration: Guests do not notice the cooling system. The 6mm lines follow the joglo’s beam structure so closely that they blend into the wood. The venue’s character and visual integrity remain completely intact.

Comfortable dining: The system delivers a temperature reduction of up to 10 degrees Celsius in the dining area. Afternoon tea service, previously uncomfortable during the hottest hours, is now a pleasant experience year-round.

Heritage protection: The antique teak structure, furnishings, and decorative elements stay dry. The high-pressure mist evaporates before it can settle on surfaces, eliminating any risk of moisture damage to irreplaceable heritage materials.
