GLOSSARY
Mist Fan (Kipas Embun)
A mist fan is a standing or wall fan with water nozzles that spray mist into the airflow. Unlike an installed high-pressure misting system it is portable, low-pressure, cools a small radius, and usually leaves surfaces damp.
Also known as: Kipas embun · Kipas angin embun · Misty fan · Water mist fan · Portable misting fan
What a mist fan is
A mist fan — sold in Indonesia as kipas embun or misty fan — is a standing or wall-mounted fan with a nozzle ring in front of the blades. A small pump, typically 3–10 bar, pushes water to the nozzles and the fan’s airflow carries the droplets toward people.
Common retail units come in 20, 26 and 30 inch sizes from brands like Krisbow, Sekai, Regency, Maspion and Misty Cool. They are inexpensive and need no installation — plug in and fill the tank.
Mist fan vs installed misting system
| Dimension | Mist fan (retail) | Installed high-pressure misting |
|---|---|---|
| Pump pressure | 3–10 bar | 70+ bar |
| Droplet size | 50–200 microns | Under 10 microns |
| Surfaces | Damp to wet | Stay dry |
| Effective area | 2–4 m radius per unit | Whole zone, along nozzle lines |
| Placement | Portable, visible | Lines hidden in ceiling or frame |
| Noise | 55–65 dB (blades) | Silent in the guest area |
| Upfront cost | Low | From IDR 15.2 million |
| Suits | Homes, small warungs, one-off events | Restaurants, hotels, villas, commercial |
When a mist fan is enough
For a home terrace, a small warung, or a single-day event, a mist fan is a sensible choice. You need cooling at one spot, there is no installation budget, and damp surfaces do not matter.
When a mist fan falls short
The problems show up when mist fans get used in commercial venues:
- Tables and menus get damp. Droplets of 50–200 microns are too large to evaporate before landing. Guests move their chairs away from the fan — the opposite of the intended effect.
- Coverage is uneven. One unit cools a small radius. A 100 m² terrace needs 8–12 fans, meaning 8–12 cables, tanks, and obstacles in the service path.
- Visible and loud. Large fans disrupt the layout and add 55–65 dB to a space meant for conversation.
- Manual tank refills. Units without a mains water connection need refilling several times per shift.
A high-pressure system solves the same problem with different physics: sub-10-micron droplets flash-evaporate before touching a surface, nozzle lines follow the building frame, and the pump sits away from guests.
How to choose
Measure the area you want cooled. Under 20 m² with tolerance for damp surfaces — a mist fan. Above that, or anywhere guests are paying to sit, an installed system costs less per square metre and does not trade away the guest experience.
