The Venue
Ritz-Carlton Mandapa is one of Ubud’s most prestigious luxury resorts, nestled along the Ayung River valley. The property features multiple outdoor dining areas surrounded by tropical gardens and rice terraces, where guests expect a seamless blend of nature and five-star service.
The Challenge
Outdoor fine dining is central to the Mandapa experience. Guests come for the open-air ambiance, the river sounds, the jungle canopy overhead. But Ubud’s tropical climate meant that midday and early afternoon temperatures regularly pushed into the low-to-mid 30s Celsius, with humidity to match.
The resort needed a cooling solution that would be completely invisible. Visible equipment, bulky fans, or any hardware that disrupted the natural aesthetic was out of the question. The system had to disappear into the architecture while delivering real, noticeable comfort to diners seated at outdoor tables.
There was an additional constraint: fine dining means white tablecloths, plated courses, and guests in elegant attire. Any system that left surfaces wet or created visible mist clouds would be unacceptable.
The Solution
MistSystem designed a high-pressure mist installation using 70-bar pump technology and 6mm stainless steel lines. The lines were routed along existing structural beams, pergola edges, and roofline details so that the entire system blended into the resort’s architecture.
Key elements of the installation:
- Stainless steel lines finished to match the venue’s natural wood and stone palette, making them virtually undetectable from guest seating
- 70-bar high-pressure operation producing ultra-fine mist droplets that evaporate before reaching table level, keeping surfaces and guests completely dry
- Zoned layout allowing staff to activate specific dining areas independently based on occupancy and time of day
- Full design consultation with the resort’s facilities team to ensure zero visual impact on the property’s award-winning landscape design
The installation covered the primary outdoor dining terrace and adjacent lounge seating areas.
The Result
The system delivered a temperature reduction of up to 10 degrees Celsius in the dining zones, transforming the outdoor experience during peak heat hours.
Comfort and guest experience: Guests can now dine outdoors comfortably throughout the day, including the previously challenging midday period. Tables stay dry. There is no visible equipment. The cooling effect feels natural, as if a breeze is coming off the river.
Operational benefit: The resort expanded outdoor dining service hours, no longer needing to steer guests indoors during the hottest part of the day. This increased the utilization of premium outdoor seating that was already built and staffed but underused.
Energy efficiency: The mist system uses up to 90% less energy than equivalent air conditioning would require for the same coverage area, aligning with the resort’s sustainability commitments.
